Cavtat, the antique Epidaurus, is a medieval Dalmatian town, build for centuries in stone according to the famous Dubrovnik building harmony.
Around 228 BC it was conquered by the Romans and became a Roman colony. Its new name was derived from the Latin "Civitas vetus". The Roman remains include theaters, tombs and the road above present day Cavtat.
The cultural and historical heritage of Cavtat is very rich and apart from the Knez Dvor and the Baroque church of St. Nikola with a Franciscan monastery, it includes the Bogišić scientific collection, a gallery of paintings by Vlaho Bukovac, the Račić Mausoleum - a work of modern sculptor Ivan Meštrović, archaeological findings of the pre-Slavenic period, town walls, the Šipun Cavern and much more.
