"Breathtaking view"
May 23, 2010 | Trip type: Couples
Stayed at Tonkovic apartments for 4 nights in May 2010. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, especially the view from our balcony, which was worth many times the 40 odd quid we paid per night for our stay. We stayed in the sea facing studio and would definitely recommend it over the hill facing rooms as the view out over the bay of Mlini is absolutely breathtaking on a clear day. The room itself was basic but adequate and both the room and the bathroom were very neat and tidy. The kitchenette was tiny but the owner does provide some basic utensils to fix a quick meal in case walking down to Mlini for dinner felt like too much trouble. The room was not cleaned on a daily basis but the trash was emptied and guests are provided with fresh towels etc.
We also had a glimpse of the 2 bedroom apartments ( EUR 75- 120/night) which looked huge, with a nice sized living room, open plan kitchen and 2 bedrooms/bathrooms- much better value than the studios, especially for a group of 4.
Previous reviewers have commented on the steep walk from the road to the apartment and we were looking forward to it with some trepidation. Although steep, the walk wasn't as bad as we anticipated and my partner, not the fittest person in the world (hope she is not reading this), could easily do it in less than 10 mins. We also discovered a short cut, which is essentially a flight of steps that take you half way up the path to the hotel from the road, during our stay ( you`ll find it on your left if you walk further up from the bus stop towards Cavtat) which helped. We also got the impression that the hotel owner usually picks up guests from the bottom of the road and drops them off on request and anyone planning a stay would be well advised to contact him in order to arrange a pick up.
As mentioned by previous reviewers, Pavo, the owner and his family are extremely hands on and go out of their way in order to make you feel special and make your stay enjoyable.
With regards to negatives, well there aren't many, but we felt that getting to and back from Dubrovnik was an issue unless one has a hire car. Bus no 10 stops at the bottom of the road and takes roughly 40 mins into town ( 10 kunas each way, app £ 1.30). However, there are only 2 buses every hour and they are often late and overcrowded. If you are planning to spend lots of time in Dubrovnik and don't have your own transport, stay somewhere closer ( at an enormous cost) or allow at least 2 hours for travel back and forth to Dubrovnik.
On the plus side, the hotel is very close to the airport and guests catching the shuttle from the airport ( 35 kunas each way) can request a drop off near the hotel (ask for 'Hotel Astarea' in Mlini).
The location, despite being very quiet and scenic, can also pose problems in terms of eating out, with the closest options being Hotel Astarea or Mlini port ( 25 mins walk from the hotel if you take the flight of steps down to the beach from the main road)
However, we felt that the positives largely outweighed the negatives and we definitely look forward to returning to Tonkovic Apartments in the near future for a more extended stay.
"A Place That Will Keep You Coming Back For More"
Nov 1, 2009 | Trip type: Family
Apartments Tonkovic is a truly wonderful place for a holiday. Nothing can prepare you for quite how stunning the view really is. The apartments were lovely, we stayed in the top floor 2 bedroom apartment where there is plenty of space for a family of 4. Pavo and his family were the most amazing hosts and helped to bring this wonderful country alive. Southern Croatia is beautiful, from the bay at Cavtat, the beaches at Mlini and Kupari to the history of Dubrovnik, there is plenty to see and do. We'd tell you not to go but only to keep it to ourselves.
"Little gem of a place"
Sep 15, 2009 | Trip type: Couples
The Tonkovic apartments are located about 25 mins drive from the airport in a little area called Mlini. A few of the reviews mention they are located up a steep hill and for sure this is true but it is a minor hindrance in the whole scheme of things. By foot it may take 15 mins but by car it’s less than 5. Once up there you will not be disappointed! We had booked into the superior room which turned out to be a private bungalow with a superb view of the bay and surrounding areas below… it was out of this world! We have posted some photos for you to see for yourself.
The apartments are family run with Pavo Tonkovic at the helm to cater for your every need. Pavo and his family are very welcoming and wish for you to have nothing but a pleasant stay. Pavo speaks very good English and will be more than happy to help out where he can which was proved on our arrival to Dubrovnik airport when we called ahead to let him know we had got our hire car and asked him for some basic directions to get to the apartments, he offered to meet us at the bottom of the hill so that we could follow him the rest of the way. Luckily his directions were so good that we found our way with no problems and were greeted by Pavo at the top of the hill where he stood awaiting our arrival.
If you’re looking for somewhere relaxing to stay away from the hustle and bustle with the beautiful sights of Croatia only minutes away, then we would highly recommend the Tonkovic Apartments. Other places to visit include, the old city and the walk around the walls, Cavtat a small beautiful waterfront town only about 15 mins away for many nice bars and restaurants. A trip into Montenegro is a must if you can (The bay of Kator) about 2 hours away as you will be blown away by the scenery etc. A trip or drive along the coast to Neum (Bosnia and H) will deliver many treats along the way also. There is so many things to do I could go on for ages….one other thing is the best beach within a couple of miles or walking distance is in Kupari. There are two ways of getting to the beach but the best is to turn left after you pass the petrol station going in the direction of Dubrovnik. There is what looks like a patrol box at the entrance but if you walk or drive half a mile, you will come across a few war torn buildings and then come across a mini car park followed by the beach. The beach is mostly used by locals but there are sunbeds etc and a bar for use. Look out for the war torn hotels…..if you are happy to travel a little further then a short boat trip to Lokrum will do the trick.
"Top Place. Excellent."

Great little apartment.
So what if it's at the top of a hill. Some people pay extra for a hotel with a fitness centre but don't use it. At Tonkovic Apartments you get the work out for free with that walk back.
The number 10 bus goes direct to Dubrovnik for 10 Kuna from the bottom of the lane and takes about 25 minutes so the apartments are a very cost effective alternative to the expansive places in Dubrovnik itself.
"Wonderful Views, friendly helpful hosts"
Jul 30, 2009 | Trip type: Couples
Although these apartments are a bit of a hike from the seafront, the views and hospitality are well worth the effort. Actually managed to lose weight and get fitter on this holiday. Pavo and his family were lovely, really friendly and ever so helpful. The apartments are far enough away from the seafront and road to be quiet and tranquil, the bus stops are located at the bottom of the hill, we used the orange Libertas buses to get around they are very cheap and very regular. Apartments are clean and well presented and the beds were very comfy. All in all very good value. Would recommend these apartments highly to moderately fit people, and anyone wishing for magnificent views and a friendly helpful atmosphere.

If you're looking for a cheap and laid back holiday this is the place to stay. The owner Pavo and his family were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Pavo picked us up and took us to the hotel with our bags. He then drove us to a supermarket to get food and supplies. We had fresh towels everyday and our bed was made too. We stayed in the apartment to the back of the building which had a view of the hillside. It would have been nice to have had a sea view but it was not a big problem as there are amazing views of the coastline as you walk down the hill to the beach. True the hill is steep but after you have done it once you know what's in store and you don't really think about it. Mlini is beautiful location easily accessible to Dubrovnik and the airport. I enjoyed the quiet surrounding and the beach and clear waters were refreshing. Initially, we had thought about being based in Dubrovnik but as it's only a short bus journey away Mlini has the all the benefits of a traditional fishing village and without the crowds of Dubrovnik. I would highly recommend these apartments and area for a chilled out relaxing holiday and will return to Mlini again for a holiday in the not too distant future.
"the walk is tough, but the view magnificant!"
May 31, 2009
We booked this apartment on a late notice and so were made aware that we would only be in the studio apartment. As it was a very last minute break, we were not bothered as long as it had all the necessary amenities. It is rated as a three star apartment and recently refurbished which was, we felt, all true. We also read about a very very steep walk. being fairly young and fit this did not phase us.
So, lets start with that walk! it is very very steep! nothing prepared us for it! however, you have to give and take a little and once over the 15 minute steep walk from the beach to the apartment, you are rewarded with the most spectactular views from the apartments. this view, paired with the owners generous hospitality was worth the walk every day. People spend a small fortune for such views and ours came at the small price of 15 minutes of excersise! Be warned though, these apartments would not be suitable for small children and people with walking difficutlies.
The apartments were indeed recently refurbished and ours was a studio. It was compact but had all the necessary amenities, including air con, satalite TV, microwave as part of the kitchen and large balcony. I understand there are one and two bedroomed apartments and a separate one bedded bungalow. The room was cleanded daily and the owners parents also lived on site. They too were soo friendly. You have to request a sea view as some apartments look out onto the mountins.
Mlini itself was very quaint and relaxed. It seems to have retained its heart, not giving way to mass tourisum, although it is still evident in and around Mlini, Srebreno and Cavatat that recovery from the civil war is ongoing. There were a handful of resturants and bars and if you wanted a more livley evening, Dubrovnik and Cavtat were only 8km away. I have to say, Mlini sits on one of the most beautiful peices of costline i have seen in the med.
The owners were so kind and took us for free to obtain our shopping when we arrived and nothing was too much trouble. Again, the warmth and generosity of the local Croats made our holiday.
To sum up, our last minute weeks holiday to Tonkovick apartments in Mlini was fantasitic. It reminded us of how Greece used to be!
"Ideal location"

In order not to waste your time I'll try not to dupe all the wonderful comments that have been attributed to Apartments Tonkovic. Believe me, they are all TRUE!!! Pavo and his family provide an excellent friendly service along with very clean, good value, quiet accommodation...you see, I can't help myself!
My advice is forget about expensive hotels along this glorious coastline (and there are plenty of them!) Pavo's place is just the ticket for exploring all that Zupa Dubrovacka has to offer.
"Beautiful country, lovely accomodation"
Nov 9, 2008 | Trip type: Couples
We had a lovely break in Mlini in September and stayed at the Tonkovic apartments.
The owner (Pavo) was excellent and met our taxi at the bottom of the very steep hill and drove us up there with all our luggage. The room was fairly basic but very clean and well maintained. We had a balcony with the most amzing view of Mlini which made the steep hill bearable. There was also air conditioning which was an absolute godsend as it was extremely hot for most of our stay.
On our second day Pavo took us to the local supermarket (which was 10 minutes away by car but much longer if you were walking) which we thought was fantastic service as we wouldn't have been able to carry everything back up the hill. He also gave us his mobile number if we needed anything and his family were also very sweet.
Mlini itself is very quiet, there are only a few bars and restaurants and a small beach but it's very pretty and if you're happy just to stroll about or sit and watch the world go by it's perfect. You could also rent small boats which looked fantastic (we really wanted to have a go but couldn't due to me being ill during our holiday).
There is good access to both Dubrovnik and Cavtat by bus and by boat, the latter I would highly recommend. Dubrovnik is a facinating city and a trip there would not be complete without walking around the old city walls - Take lots of water though it gets VERY hot. It probably takes about an hour or so to walk all the way round.
There are a couple of little cafes selling drinks and ice creams if you need to get out of the sun for a little while.
Cavtat was also very pretty and there's a lovely walk along the coastal path which we found enjoyable. There are more shops in these two towns so get your sounveniers whilst you're there as we only spotted one very small shop in Mlini.
For dining out in Mlini, try the Flamingo restaurant for grilled meats and pizzas and Lanterna for fish. Both recommended to us by Pavo and both really nice.
Unfortunately half our holiday was spoilt due to illness after eating fish at a restaurant in Cavtat (I can't remember the name of it unfortunately). However Croatia is absolutely stunning and I would visit again. This is definitely a place for people interested in history and culture. I would certainly stay at Tonkovic apartments again but would most certainly hire a care, the hill is not for the faint hearted!
"Fantastic Priceless Views!"
Aug 12, 2008 | Trip type: Family
The apartment itself was very modern and more than 3* rating, more of a 4*.
We stayed at Tonkovic apartments from the 3rd to 10th august and had a fantastic stay.
The owner (Pavo) was very friendly and accommodating as was his parents. The locals and neighbours were very friendly too.
The rooms were cleaned everyday by Pavo's mum.
We had everything we needed including microwave and the bathroom was nice and clean with a good shower.
We had a twin room with a very spacious balcony with priceless views!
Mlini itself was a beautiful little bay with a water polo area which the locals are very into and you can catch a game most nights.
It has a great boat service to and from Dubrovnik and Cavtat which we went on many times, costing around £5 each way.
Also we got the bus which was close to the apartment, only taking 15 minutes to Dubrovnik. Buses run every 10-15 mins.
You can also get to the bus station and take the coach to Montenegro for just £7, however they are not frequent coaches so take the 9.30am or 3.30pm.
One slight disadvantage was the 'hill' it was very steep! I am 20 and physically fit yet struggled, do not attempt this in the middle of the day as i did! My mum found it a task walking up the hill as we did not hire a car. However the view was so worth it! They are priceless views and the sunsets are something else. So do not let its location put you off!
All in all there are no complaints and would advise anyone to stay here at Pavo's 'house'
His parents were very sweet and shared a drink with us on our last day.
The weather was perfect everyday, 35 degrees mostly and very hot so take a hat and water when walking up and down the hill.
Croatia is a beautiful country, it was my 2nd time in the country and i plan to go again but for much longer! ! !
"Truly Fantastic"
Aug 1, 2008 | Trip type: Couples
I booked these apartments via lastminute.com. Upon arriving into dubrovnik, we phoned the owner who met us at a nearby hotel and guided us the hillside to the apartment. We stayed in the Bungalow, which is separate from the main house and is excellent. The views are fanstastic and you have your own private Balcony to enjoy the view.
The room was cleaned well daily
The location is however a bit of a disadvantage as there is a steep walk up to the apartments after a night out or day in Mlini. If you have a car it would be easier to drive about. But the views you get from being so high up would not be possible without the hill!
When we left the owner gave us a drink and biscuits which i felt was very nice added a personal touch.
in summary excellent views, clean, comfortable and truly unique.
"Excellent"
Aug 8, 2007 | Trip type: Couples
My wife and I visted these apartments in September 2006 and had what is probably our best holiday ever. The scenery is breathtaking, and the people are very friendly.
The apartments are in Mlini but high on a hill above the centre of town, but when you have a hire car this does not really matter.
The apartments are very clean, and the owner is very helpful, and will give assisatnce with any arrangements you may need.
It is a perfect base for touring the area. The old town of Dubrovnik is about 7km away and Montenegro can be reached in under an hour. There is also a town called Cavtat with plenty of restaurants and market stalls.
Mlini itself is a quiet town with a few restaurants, and a nice little harbour. The occassional game of water polo can be viewed, and small boats can be hired to go round the islands.
We intend to return this year if possible.
